Nicholas Bausman Jr. was the fifth of ten children born to Nicholas Sr. and Mary (Casper) Bausman. Nicholas Jr’s daughter Viola was my mother’s paternal grandmother.
Nicholas “Nick” Bausman Jr. was born 02 December 1855 in Guilford Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Nick was raised Presbyterian.
He married Catherine “Katie” Hebenstreit on 21 January 1886 at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Shullsburg, Lafayette County, Wisconsin. Katie was born 23 December 1863 in Shullsburg to Vitus Hebenstreit and Bertha Shaffer, who were Prussian immigrants.
Nick and Katie had five children:
- Gertrude (Bausman) Schoenhard (1887 – 1969)
- Clement Bausman (1888 – 1888)
- Pearl (Bausman) Hesselbacher (1890 – 1940)
- Viola (Bausman) Davis Hickman (1893 – 1974)
- Hazel Helena Bausman (1896 – 1929)
All their children were born in Guilford Township and raised in Katie’s Roman Catholic faith. Nick farmed all his life.
When Nick died 12 January 1922, his service was held at the Presbyterian church in Scales Mound, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Katie died 21 July 1943 and her funeral service was held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Scales Mound. Nick and Katie are buried at Scales Mound Township Cemetery.
