Since Argo won best picture on Sunday night's Academy Awards, I've been thinking about Colonel Leland James Holland. He wasn't rescued; he was one of the 52 held for 444 days in Tehran. Col. Holland was a native of Scales Mound, Illinois, a town of less than 350 people. Today I'm going to share a resource I frequently use: Google Newspaper Archive. I use it to access The Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, Iowa). Since I'm nowhere near Dubuque, I love that this information is available for free. I use this resource all the time to access one newspaper. It works for me, and I am well aware of the archive's limitations. I think the best word to describe Google Newspaper Archive is quirky. It's certainly not fully-fleshed out and functioning. Matchbox Twenty

On February 13, I saw my favorite band in concert when Matchbox Twenty came to Western Michigan University's Miller Auditorium in Kalamazoo on their 'North' tour. "American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips opened for them. I wasn't familiar with Phillips but I enjoyed his performance. So I was going through some of my grandmother's pictures and found a few of me as a child. This was a good reminder to me that not all history is from other generations. It's good to take a look at your own history. All pictures taken at the home of Grandma and Grandpa Davis [Spud and Marian (Bohnsack) Davis] in Scales Mound, Illinois. Hazel Bausman Killed in Car Accident

Hazel Bausman was an aunt to my maternal grandfather, Stanley "Spud" Davis. She died in a car accident in 1929. I found the following article discussing her accident and published in the Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, Iowa) on November 20, 1929. I accessed the article at Google Newspaper Archives. I've read several articles on her death and there doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. Charles Bausman Update!

Back in January, I posted a brief bio on Charles Bausman, the brother of Nicholas Bausman Jr. (Nicholas was my maternal grandfather's grandfather.) Since then I've learned a bit more. Late last year, I contacted the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives in Butte, Montana, to see if they had any information on Charles. These are the daughters of Nicholas Jr. and Catherine (Hebenstreit) Bausman. From left to right, standing are Pearl, Gertrude and Viola. Hazel is sitting. Viola was my maternal grandfather's mother. I believe the photo was taken about 1898 or 1899 since Gertrude (the oldest) was born in 1887, Pearl in 1890, Viola in 1893, and Hazel in November 1896. I've learned many things while focusing my research on the Bausmans over the past few weeks. One of them is that I've never posted about Pearl (Bausman) Hesselbacher, a sister to Viola (my mother's paternal grandmother). This past summer I had the opportunity to photograph Pearl's wedding picture (see right). My uncle surprised me with the photo after borrowing it from the widow of Pearl's son Eldon. Hazel Bausman was a sister of Viola (Bausman) Davis Hickman, my maternal grandfather's mother. Hazel enjoyed photography, and took these shots at her uncle Lawrence Lincoln Bausman's farm in Pleasant Valley, Grundy county, Iowa. I love that their dog appears in both pictures, though it is resting underneath the car in one. Because of a reader's response on a previous post, I remembered an article I read about the death of Iva (Bausman) Leverton. It was found in the genealogy files belonging to Gertrude (Bausman) Schoenhard, a cousin of Iva's and my maternal grandfather's aunt. The accident sounds pretty horrific. When I was young, my parents and grandparents listened to Paul Harvey. I enjoyed listening to his stories and I can still hear his voice signing off with the words "Paul Harvey.... Good day." While watching the Super Bowl, it was Dodge Ram's commercial with pictures of the American farmer and a story told by Paul Harvey that captured my attention. Here is the obituary of Lee Lincoln Bausman, killed in a car/train accident on 20 November 1919 in Austin, Mower County, Minnesota. He was the son of Lawrence and Minnie (Benz) Bausman. Transcription of Obituary: Lee Lincoln Bausman was born August 27th, 1890, in Pleasant Valley township, Grundy County, Iowa, and passed to the Great Beyond at the St. Olaf Hospital, Austin, Minnesota, on November 20, 1919, at the age of 29 years, 2 months and 23 days. Lee Bausman and Henry Harms Hit By Train, Die

Another article about the deaths of Lee Bausman and Henry Harms. The car/train accident occurred on 20 November 1919 in Austin, Mower County, Minnesota. Lee was 29 and Henry was 37. I wish I knew more about Henry Harms. I think he was married with at least six children. Henry's nephew William Harms married Lee's sister Gladys in 1925.
