Obituary: Hester Jane (Ingram) Hicks

Headstone Closeup: Hester Jane (Ingram) Hicks, wife of Henry Hicks Sr

My ggg-grandmother Hester Jane (Ingram) Hicks was born in Crowan, Cornwall, England in 1822, and died on October 24, 1889, in Scales Mound, Jo Daviess Co, Illinois. When she was 20 years old, she married Henry Hicks. The marriage took place in Cornwall, England, on March 28, 1842.   According to her son Alfred's biography published in The History of the Yakima Valley, Washington, Comprising Yakima, Kittitas and Benton Counties (1919) V.II, page 645: "They were married in their native country and their wedding journey consisted of a trip to the United States. Singer Catholic Cemetery

Headstone: Clement Bausman

I've been wanting to visit Singer Catholic Cemetery in Guilford Twp, Illinois.  Clement, the infant brother of my great-grandmother, Viola (Bausman) Davis Hickman, is buried here. I tried to find this cemetery by myself but was unable.  Fortunately, my mom's friend Tom Townsend had been to the cemetery and graciously volunteered to take my parents and me. My visit to Singer Catholic Cemetery in Oct 2011 revealed a cemetery in major need of brush removal and trimming around the headstones. While we were at the cemetery, the man who owns the cemetery land stopped … [Read more...]

Biography: William Passmore

William Passmore

William Passmore is not a direct ancestor of mine.  His daughter Elizabeth Edna Passmore married James T. Davis, a nephew of my gg-grandfather John B. Davis.  Passmore was the coroner for the suicide of William Davis, brother of James T. Davis. His ties to the Davis family are why I'm posting his biography published in Portrait and Biographical Album of Jo Daviess and Carroll Counties, Illinois (1889), p257. William Passmore, his wives Elizabeth and Sarah, and children Anna Marie, Salina, and John Yonatt are buried in Council Hill Cemetery. Unfortunately, I was … [Read more...]

Headstone: Rebecca (Firestone) Smith

Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness is a fantastic website where dedicated volunteers agree to do a free genealogy research task at least once per month in their local area purely as an act of kindness.  I've used the website three times and am always amazed when they are able to get my information. In July I placed a request to Laurie Voss in Kosciusko County, Indiana, for a picture of my gggg-grandmother's headstone.  Rebecca (Firestone) Smith is buried in Firestone Cemetery in Kosciusko County, Indiana. Laurie was unable to find the headstone and, while … [Read more...]
