Zazios Cooking Class

Zazios logo

Last month I took a cooking class at Zazios, one of the local restaurants in Kalamazoo. Having never taken this type of class, I crossed my fingers and hoped for an enjoyable Saturday afternoon. The small class of nine participants included two couples, a man with his teenage son, a group of three women, and myself. The executive chef and owner, John Korycki, was the instructor. The class ran from noon to 4:30 p.m. The experience was enjoyable and Chef Korycki was an engaging instructor. Things I learned: the correct way to hold a knife how to properly … [Read more...]

Matchbox Twenty

Matchbox Twenty Concert Poster

On February 13, I saw my favorite band in concert when Matchbox Twenty came to Western Michigan University's Miller Auditorium in Kalamazoo on their 'North' tour. "American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips opened for them.  I wasn't familiar with Phillips but I enjoyed his performance. Reminded me of my grandparents and the long, hard hours and commitment it takes to farm. … [Read more...]

Bertha Galpin or Wizard of Oz Villian? You decide

Bertha Galpin

A fun picture to enjoy on a Friday. I love this picture because Bertha Galpin reminds me of Miss Almira Gulch - the mean lady who wants Toto destroyed -  from The Wizard of Oz (1939 film). It's the bike that brings the comparison to mind.  All that's missing are baskets for the front and back. Bertha is not a relative of mine, but she was a friend to the Bausmans.  The photo is kept in a beautiful antique Bausman photo album. Written on back of photo: Bertha Galpin, no relation. Neighbor & Friend of the Bausmans. Photo taken at Byerly in Parkersburg, Iowa. … [Read more...]
