Obituary: Nicholas Bausman Sr

Nicholas and Mary (Casper) Bausman

Nicholas Bausman Sr. is my ggg-grandfather.  This past summer I had the opportunity to meet his great-granddaughter Janice who lives in Iowa. She's a genealogy enthusiast and had a typed transcription of Nicholas Bausman Sr's obituary, originally published in the Galena Gazette. The obituary lists his marriage to Mary Casper as occurring in 1849 in Pennsylvania. I've seen that marriage date before and it's wrong.  They married 15 February 1852 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, as listed in Book A of Jo Daviess County, Illinois, Marriages. Janice also has a beautiful … [Read more...]

Marriage: Viola Bausman and Percy Davis

The wedding of Viola Bausman and Percy Davis

I found a newspaper clipping of a marriage announcement for my maternal grandfather's parents Viola Bausman and Percy Davis while going through some genealogy files once belonging to Viola's sister, Gertrude (Bausman) Schoenhard.  I enjoyed reading the description of Viola's wedding dress.  I have a picture of their wedding (posted below next to the article transcription), but would never have known the color of her dress without this clipping. Viola was 20 when she married Percy who was 26. There is no citation for the … [Read more...]

Marriage Announcement: Viola Bausman and Percy Davis

Marriage announcement for Viola Bausman and Percy Davis, 1913

A few months ago, I was going through some of the genealogy files I received after my maternal grandmother died in 2011.  It was an unexpected pleasure to find the marriage announcement for my mother's paternal grandparents Viola Edith Bausman and Percival Leland Davis.  The announcement was in pristine condition, in an envelope addressed to Percy's maternal uncle James Hicks. Transcription: Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Bausman announce the marriage of their daughter Viola Edith to Mr. Percival L. Davis on Thursday, July seventeenth nineteen hundred and thirteen … [Read more...]

Identified! Lavelle and Lawrence Bausman

Lavelle and Lawrence Bausman

The picture at the right is one of the unidentified pictures from my great-grandmother Viola's collection. Lavelle and Lawrence Bausman are the children of Irl Hicks Bausman and Annette Marie Jensen. Irl was Viola's cousin. I was able to identify it over the summer after visiting Pleasant Valley, Iowa, and meeting Janice, a cousin of Lavelle and Lawrence. Last week, I sent this picture to Janice, so she could give it to the widow of Lawrence. So, I've identified one picture of Viola's; only 29 more to go! … [Read more...]

Publishing My Family History

Generations Book Cover

For the past several years, I've been working on a family history book of my maternal grandparents, Stanley "Spud" Davis and Marian Bohnsack.  After my grandma died late last year, completing the book became a priority.  I knew it was something she'd appreciate and completing it is my way of honoring her and my grandfather's legacy. I'm self-publishing through Blurb.com and I used their software, BookSmart.  Read my review of BookSmart at my other blog.  I ordered a proof and should receive it in a couple of weeks.  I've already decided to tweak a couple of … [Read more...]

Viola Bausman’s oration from her 1912 Scales Mound High School Commencement

Viola Bausman 1912 High School Graduation

My great-grandmother, Viola (Bausman) Davis Hickman, was a teacher and educator.  I discovered the oration that she gave at her Scales Mound, Illinois, commencement on June 7, 1912.  She had written her speech in her graduation memory book. The Tercentennial of Henry Hudson by Viola Edith Bausman There was a time when Americans lacked distinction. It was traditionally assumed that the people of the United States had suffered the spirit of commercialism to rob them of their noble instincts and to stunt their intellectual development. Now, however, the American … [Read more...]

Singer Catholic Cemetery

Headstone: Clement Bausman

I've been wanting to visit Singer Catholic Cemetery in Guilford Twp, Illinois.  Clement, the infant brother of my great-grandmother, Viola (Bausman) Davis Hickman, is buried here. I tried to find this cemetery by myself but was unable.  Fortunately, my mom's friend Tom Townsend had been to the cemetery and graciously volunteered to take my parents and me. My visit to Singer Catholic Cemetery in Oct 2011 revealed a cemetery in major need of brush removal and trimming around the headstones. While we were at the cemetery, the man who owns the cemetery land stopped … [Read more...]

Schoenhard Relatives?

Isola Lillian Stadel

I found an envelope containing four pictures.  Written on the outside of the envelope was: We think these pictures are some of Uncle Lester's Schoenhard family that live in Belote, Wis. Possibly some of his half sisters family. Also related to Ernie Schoenhard. Betty S. wasn't sure, really didn't get to know them. Uncle Lester used to visit a 1/2 sister named Lillian. We think she married a Stadel. I don't recognize the handwriting, so I'm not sure who gave these photos to my grandmother. There are Schoenhard relatives on my grandfather's side of the family.  I … [Read more...]
