Letter from Rev. Hermann Emil Studier to Dorothea (Bohnsack) Studier

Wilhelm and Dorothea (Bohnsack) Studier

Dorothea (Bohnsack) Studier was the twin sister of my 2nd great-grandfather, Carl Hermann "Herman" Bohnsack. Rev. Hermann Emil Studier was born in Germany in 1859, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1869. His older brother, Wilhelm, was Dorothea's husband. In 1939, Dorothea received a letter from her brother-in-law, Rev. Studier. While Dorothea and Rev. Studier were both born in Germany, the letter was written in English. In the letter, Rev. Studier talks about his various ailments and daily activities. Obituary: Joachim Bohnsack

Headstone: Joachim Bohnsack

Joachim Bohnsack was the son of Johann J.H. Bohnsack and a brother of my g-g-grandfather, Carl Herman Bohnsack.  Joachim is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Galena Illinois. I found his headstone when I was doing my walking tour of Greenwood Cemetery.  I knew he was buried in Greenwood; I just didn't know where. I also think it's odd that he and his first wife, Marie (Peters), are buried in different cemeteries. Buried next to him is a Fredericka Bohnsack.  His second wife's name was Recha (Palmer).   Until I stumbled upon his headstone, I never heard of a … [Read more...]

Obituary: Minnie (Deininger) Bohnsack

Minnie (Deininger) Bohnsack

My mom recently lent me some binders filled with genealogical information.  In them, I  was excited to find my great-grandmother's obituary.  She was the wife of Leo Bohnsack and my mom's grandmother. Minnie (Deininger) Bohnsack died before I was born, but my mom has always spoken very warmly of her.  Mom said Minnie was the sweetest lady, made the best bread, and spoke with a heavy German accent.  I find the fact that Minnie had an accent interesting since she was born in Galena, Illinois.  Her parents were German, and Mom remembers that as a child everyone spoke … [Read more...]

Obituary: Carolina Sophia (Wulff) Bohnsack

Lena Wulff

Obviously, I"ve had a lot of luck finding obituaries about the Wulff family.   This time, I came across my great-great grandmother's, Carolina Sophia Wulff,  from the Freeport Journal-Standard, Sept 30, 1949, page 16. The portrait of Lena is a scan of a copy.  I do not have the original, have never seen the original, and do not remember how I received this image.  Probably through an ancestry.com contact. I'm not sure what's going on with the photo.  It sort of looks like the paper is curling. Transcription of obituary: Mrs. Lena Bohnsack Elizabeth, Ill., … [Read more...]
