Pictures of Me

Mom's trying to teach me to ride a horse - good luck!

So I was going through some of my grandmother's pictures and found a few of me as a child. This was a good reminder to me that not all history is from other generations.  It's good to take a look at your own history. All pictures taken at the home of Grandma and Grandpa Davis [Spud and Marian (Bohnsack) Davis] in Scales Mound, Illinois.  My cousin Dan Davis bought the farm from them in the late 1990s/early 2000s.  Last year, he tore down the old homestead to build a new house. The brick is being recycled. I think my favorite pictures are: the one of me as a … [Read more...]

Bausman Girls

Bausman Girls

These are the daughters of Nicholas Jr. and Catherine (Hebenstreit) Bausman. From left to right, standing are Pearl, Gertrude and Viola.  Hazel is sitting. Viola was my maternal grandfather's mother. I believe the photo was taken about 1898 or 1899 since Gertrude (the oldest) was born in 1887, Pearl in 1890, Viola in 1893, and Hazel in November 1896. I shot this photo when I visited Steamboat Rock, Iowa, in June 2012.  When my mom saw the picture, she immediately recognized her grandmother Viola, saying it looked just like her. … [Read more...]

Hazel Bausman With Her Pleasant Valley Relatives

Hazel Bausman with Lawrence, Minnie and Wayne Bausman

Hazel Bausman was a sister of Viola (Bausman) Davis Hickman, my maternal grandfather's mother. Hazel enjoyed photography, and took these shots at her uncle Lawrence Lincoln Bausman's farm in Pleasant Valley, Grundy county, Iowa. I love that their dog appears in both pictures, though it is resting underneath the car in one. While I don't know the exact date the photo was taken, it was before November 1929 since Hazel died in a car accident that month at age 33. … [Read more...]

Bausman Brothers

The Bausman Brothers

This past summer I had the opportunity to meet a distant Bausman relative when I traveled to Steamboat Rock, Iowa. Janice showed me amazing Bausman family photos.  The one I'm sharing today is of the Bausman Brothers.  I took this photograph of a photocopy.  Unfortunately, Janice did not remember where she got her photocopy. Nicholas Sr. and Mary (Casper) Bausman had ten children; six sons living to adulthood.  One of these sons was my maternal grandfather's grandfather, Nicholas Bausman Jr, the man sitting on the right.  Lawrence Lincoln Bausman, the young man … [Read more...]

Identified! Lavelle and Lawrence Bausman

Lavelle and Lawrence Bausman

The picture at the right is one of the unidentified pictures from my great-grandmother Viola's collection. Lavelle and Lawrence Bausman are the children of Irl Hicks Bausman and Annette Marie Jensen. Irl was Viola's cousin. I was able to identify it over the summer after visiting Pleasant Valley, Iowa, and meeting Janice, a cousin of Lavelle and Lawrence. Last week, I sent this picture to Janice, so she could give it to the widow of Lawrence. So, I've identified one picture of Viola's; only 29 more to go! … [Read more...]

Five Generations of Loretta (Cherry) O’Neil Boyle’s family

Five Generations of Loretta Cherry's family

When I was finishing my book, I wanted to include a bit of family history of my grandfather's first wife, Cleone O'Neill, whose parents were Joseph Patrick O'Neil and Loretta Bernice Cherry. Both Joseph and Loretta died young.  Joseph was 28 when he died in a mining accident in 1917. Loretta remarried a few years later, but died in 1928 at age 38. This past summer, I was looking through some photo albums at my Aunt Loretta's house and saw this old newspaper clipping. It's great because it has five generations of  Loretta (Cherry) O'Neil's family. It was published … [Read more...]

Schoenhard Relatives?

Isola Lillian Stadel

I found an envelope containing four pictures.  Written on the outside of the envelope was: We think these pictures are some of Uncle Lester's Schoenhard family that live in Belote, Wis. Possibly some of his half sisters family. Also related to Ernie Schoenhard. Betty S. wasn't sure, really didn't get to know them. Uncle Lester used to visit a 1/2 sister named Lillian. We think she married a Stadel. I don't recognize the handwriting, so I'm not sure who gave these photos to my grandmother. There are Schoenhard relatives on my grandfather's side of the family.  I … [Read more...]

Family History: Jacob and Christina (Casper) Hess

Frank Hess

My mom has binders filled with interesting information.  I've gone through them several times, and still find things. How do I miss this stuff? My discovery of the family history of Jacob Sr and Christina (Casper) Hess is one of these interesting finds.  My mother received this from her parents; I'm not sure when they got it. The history was written by Elmer William Hess, as told to him by his father, Jacob Hess Jr.  Jacob Jr was the son of Jacob Sr and Christina. Christina (Casper) Hess was the sister of Mary Casper, wife of Nicholas Bausman Sr (my … [Read more...]

Rebecca (Firestone) Smith Headstone – Thank You RAOGK.org!

Headstone: Rebecca (Firestone) Smith

Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness is a fantastic website where dedicated volunteers agree to do a free genealogy research task at least once per month in their local area purely as an act of kindness.  I've used the website three times and am always amazed when they are able to get my information. In July I placed a request to Laurie Voss in Kosciusko County, Indiana, for a picture of my gggg-grandmother's headstone.  Rebecca (Firestone) Smith is buried in Firestone Cemetery in Kosciusko County, Indiana. Laurie was unable to find the headstone and, while … [Read more...]

All the people buried in these cemeteries are relatives on my dad's side of the family. … [Read more...]

Discovery: Picture of Lawrence Bausman Family?

Studio: J.H. Woods; Beatrice, Nebraska

Last week, I went back to Scales Mound Illinois to visit my grandmother.  My grandma has my great-grandmother's, Viola Bausman Davis,  photo collection.  I thought I'd seen all the photos, but I was wrong! I discovered beneath several boxes of photos this gem.  And when I say beneath several boxes, I mean that literally.  It was the only item in a brown paper sack with about 10 boxes of photos sitting on top of it.  No wonder I missed it when I looked at those photos over the past 15 years. Isn't it lovely?  On the back is written "think this is Lawrence … [Read more...]
