Our mother’s [Ernestine (Sanders) Strelesky] body was sent to Dubuque for burial. I went with Aunt Norma – our mother’s wish. Our dad [Jack Strelesky] and Eunice, Alice and Herb went to Grandma Sanders [Josephine (Uhlrich) Sanders]. The flu epidemic was so bad everything was closed – schools, churches, department stores and all public buildings – theaters too. People were not allowed to gather. Rose (Strelesky) Weber was born on December 20, 1873, in Mineral Point, Iowa County, Wisconsin. She was the second of nine children born to Frank and Fannie (Hainey) Strelesky.  (Other spellings: Streletzky and Streletsky) She was the sister of my great-grandfather, John Joseph Strelesky.  Her other siblings: Agnes, Marie, Amelia, Lavina, Albert, and Alexander. One sibling's name remains unidentified, being born between 1880 and dying before 1900. Rose married Joseph Christoph Weber on September 22, 1893, in Chicago, Illinois. Amelia "Millie" Strelesky was a younger sister to my great-grandfather, John Joseph "Jack" Strelesky. Millie was born July 1883 in Mineral Point, Wisconsin.  She was the fifth of eight children born to Frank and Fannie (Hainey) Strelesky.  Millie married James Arthur Moore on May 21, 1907, at Superior, Douglas Co, Wisconsin.  They had two children: Dorothy and Albert.  According to letter written by my grandmother's sister, Alice (Strelesky) Humphrey, Millie and James divorced and she raised the children by herself. Streletzkys from Dubuque, Iowa

I've been researching my grandmother Eunice Strelesky ancestors and I've come across a family with the last name of Streletzky living in Dubuque, Iowa.  While my grandmother wasn't born in Dubuque, she grew up there.  Since Strelesky is not a common name, I've wondered if there could be a connection between the families.  I believe if the families are related, the lineage connection would probably be between Frank Strelesky, my grandmother's grandfather, and John Streletzky (married to Margaretha Giesler/Margaret Geisen).  I think it's highly possible that they were … [Read more...]
