Obituary: Catherine (Fuch) Sanders

Obituary: Catherine (Fuch) Sanders

Catherine (Fuch) Sanders was my g-g-g grandmother.  She was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany in Feb 1823 and immigrated to the United States about 1846.  She married A.F.E. Sanders, who died in 1891.  Interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery, but I do not know the location of her grave. The 1900 U.S. Federal Census lists her as having 11 children.  I can positively identify six children: John Henry Sanders, Ernest Vincent Sanders, Catherine Sanders, Edward Sanders and Sarah (Sanders) Hansing, and Margaret (Sanders) Fairweather. There are Sanders children buried … [Read more...]

Obituary: A.F.E. Sanders

My ggg grandfather was Adam Frederick Ernest Sanders.  I was recently back in Galena Illinois and was able to find his obituary that was published in the Galena Daily Gazette on 9 Oct 1891.  I also went to the Galena courthouse, but there is no death certificate on file.  His wife Catherine (Fuch) is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, so he's probably buried there. Transcription of obituary: A.F.E. Sanders After a long illness with dropsy of the heart Mr. A. F. Sanders passed away this morning, at his home on Hill street. Obituary: Eunice (Strelesky) Lightcap

Eunice Strelesky

Eunice StreleskyEunice (Strelesky) Lightcap, daughter of John Joseph "Jack" and Ernestine (Sanders) Strelesky, was born in Sheridan, Wyoming, on December 21, 1915, and died on November 15, 1998, in Dubuque, Iowa.   The picture at the left is her 1933 high school graduation. My grandmother's obituary was published November 18, 1998, in the Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, Iowa), page 6C.  The obituary incorrectly states that my grandparents married in 1935 in Dubuque, Iowa.  They actually married on March 17, 1936, at St. Mary's Church in Freeport, … [Read more...]

Inquest Results/Coroner’s Jury re: Hazel Bausman’s death in car accident

Hazel Bausman

Hazel Bausman, daughter of Nicholas Jr. and Catherine (Hebenstreit) Bausman, and a sister of my great-grandmother, Viola (Bausman) Davis Hickman.  Her other siblings were Gertrude, Clement, Pearl and Viola. Hazel died on November 20, 1929, in a car accident.  Hazel is buried in Scales Mound Township Cemetery, Scales Mound, Illinois. While perusing some of my mom's genealogy binders, I found this article that discusses the car accident and the inquest that followed. Obituary: John Joseph Strelesky

John Joseph Strelesky

Up until now, I've really been focused on sharing obituaries from my mom's side of the family.  Probably because I know much more about that side of my family than my dad's.  However, today I'm going to share my great-grandfather's obituary.  Jack Strelesky was my grandmother's father. I know next to nothing about this side of my family.  Jack was born in Mineral Point Wisconsin and had a bunch of brothers and sisters: Agnes, Rose, Mary, Amelia, Lavinia, Albert, James Alexander (or Alexander James). Researching this side of the family has been challenging because … [Read more...]

Discovery: Picture of Lawrence Bausman Family?

Studio: J.H. Woods; Beatrice, Nebraska

Last week, I went back to Scales Mound Illinois to visit my grandmother.  My grandma has my great-grandmother's, Viola Bausman Davis,  photo collection.  I thought I'd seen all the photos, but I was wrong! I discovered beneath several boxes of photos this gem.  And when I say beneath several boxes, I mean that literally.  It was the only item in a brown paper sack with about 10 boxes of photos sitting on top of it.  No wonder I missed it when I looked at those photos over the past 15 years. Isn't it lovely?  On the back is written "think this is Lawrence … [Read more...]

Family History

I’ve been researching my family history for about 10 years, give or take.  About 5 years ago, I gave up using software that needed to be installed on a computer. Instead I use ancestry.com’s system.  It allows for me to collaborate with my mom about research and let other family members look at it.  If it was only on my computer, I would not have the collaborative opportunity.  Whether this is  a good or bad thing is open to debate. Anyway, one of the drawbacks to using a proprietary system like ancestry.com is that those who are not subscribers cannot access … [Read more...]
