Louis Bausman

Louis Bausman

Louis Bausman was the ninth child born to Nicholas Sr. and Mary (Casper) Bausman. The tenth child, Jacob, died in infancy.  The youngest son to live to adulthood, I don't know much about Louis, except for what I have gleaned from official records.  Louis was a brother of Nicholas Bausman Jr, my maternal grandfather's grandfather. Louis was born November 1863 in Guilford Township, Jo Daviess county, Illinois. He married Ida Agnes Zeal, daughter of George and Elizabeth (Blackmore) Zeal, on 11 January 1900 in Millbrig, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. O.J. Simmons, … [Read more...]

John Bausman

John Bausman

John Bausman was a younger brother of Nicholas Bausman Jr, my maternal grandfather’s grandfather. John was the seventh of ten children born to Nicholas Sr. and Mary (Casper) Bausman. He is the brother I know least about since John died when he was about 26. I knew he was born about 1859 and died about 1885. While researching his brother Charles, I discovered a cemetery listing for a John Bausman buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana, who was born in 1859 and died in 1885. Charles lived in Butte, and while it could be a coincidence, … [Read more...]

Charles Bausman

Charles Bausman

Since my previous post showcased the handsome sons of Nicholas Sr. and Mary (Casper) Bausman, I thought my next few would give a bit of an overview about each of them, starting with the oldest Charles Bausman. Charles' brother Nicholas Bausman Jr was my maternal grandfather's grandfather. Charles Bausman was the fourth of ten children born to Nicholas Sr. and Mary, but the first child who did not die in infancy or early childhood.  Mary and Philip died in infancy, about 1850 and 1851, respectively. Henry died about 1856 at four years. Six children, all sons, lived … [Read more...]

Bausman Brothers

The Bausman Brothers

This past summer I had the opportunity to meet a distant Bausman relative when I traveled to Steamboat Rock, Iowa. Janice showed me amazing Bausman family photos.  The one I'm sharing today is of the Bausman Brothers.  I took this photograph of a photocopy.  Unfortunately, Janice did not remember where she got her photocopy. Nicholas Sr. and Mary (Casper) Bausman had ten children; six sons living to adulthood.  One of these sons was my maternal grandfather's grandfather, Nicholas Bausman Jr, the man sitting on the right.  Lawrence Lincoln Bausman, the young man … [Read more...]

Obituary: Carl Bausman

Obituary: Carl Bausman

When I was going through newspaper clippings that once belonged to Gertrude (Bausman) Schoenhard (sister of my maternal grandfather's mother Viola), I found an obituary for Carl Bausman.  Intriguing since this was not a relative I was familiar with.  I knew he must be related since his obituary was with other notable events in the Bausman family. And yes, I know his last name was Bausman, but since I'd never heard of him I wasn't going to immediately jump to a familial connection.  His obituary's inclusion in Gertrude's clippings of the death of her sister Helena … [Read more...]

Obituary: Nicholas Bausman Sr

Nicholas and Mary (Casper) Bausman

Nicholas Bausman Sr. is my ggg-grandfather.  This past summer I had the opportunity to meet his great-granddaughter Janice who lives in Iowa. She's a genealogy enthusiast and had a typed transcription of Nicholas Bausman Sr's obituary, originally published in the Galena Gazette. The obituary lists his marriage to Mary Casper as occurring in 1849 in Pennsylvania. I've seen that marriage date before and it's wrong.  They married 15 February 1852 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, as listed in Book A of Jo Daviess County, Illinois, Marriages. Janice also has a beautiful … [Read more...]

Family History: Jacob and Christina (Casper) Hess

Frank Hess

My mom has binders filled with interesting information.  I've gone through them several times, and still find things. How do I miss this stuff? My discovery of the family history of Jacob Sr and Christina (Casper) Hess is one of these interesting finds.  My mother received this from her parents; I'm not sure when they got it. The history was written by Elmer William Hess, as told to him by his father, Jacob Hess Jr.  Jacob Jr was the son of Jacob Sr and Christina. Christina (Casper) Hess was the sister of Mary Casper, wife of Nicholas Bausman Sr (my … [Read more...]
