Bausman Girls

Bausman Girls

These are the daughters of Nicholas Jr. and Catherine (Hebenstreit) Bausman. From left to right, standing are Pearl, Gertrude and Viola.  Hazel is sitting. Viola was my maternal grandfather's mother. I believe the photo was taken about 1898 or 1899 since Gertrude (the oldest) was born in 1887, Pearl in 1890, Viola in 1893, and Hazel in November 1896. I shot this photo when I visited Steamboat Rock, Iowa, in June 2012.  When my mom saw the picture, she immediately recognized her grandmother Viola, saying it looked just like her. … [Read more...]

Pearl Bausman Hesselbacher

Pearl Bausman and Jack Hesselbacher Wedding

I've learned many things while focusing my research on the Bausmans over the past few weeks.  One of them is that I've never posted about Pearl (Bausman) Hesselbacher, a sister to Viola (my mother's paternal grandmother). This past summer I had the opportunity to photograph Pearl's wedding picture (see right). My uncle surprised me with the photo after borrowing it from the widow of Pearl's son Eldon. Pearl was the third of five children born to Nicholas Jr. and Catherine (Hebenstreit) Bausman.  She was born 01 July 1890 in Guilford Township, Jo Daviess county, … [Read more...]

Marriage: Viola Bausman and Percy Davis

The wedding of Viola Bausman and Percy Davis

I found a newspaper clipping of a marriage announcement for my maternal grandfather's parents Viola Bausman and Percy Davis while going through some genealogy files once belonging to Viola's sister, Gertrude (Bausman) Schoenhard.  I enjoyed reading the description of Viola's wedding dress.  I have a picture of their wedding (posted below next to the article transcription), but would never have known the color of her dress without this clipping. Viola was 20 when she married Percy who was 26. There is no citation for the … [Read more...]

Obituary: Catherine (Hebenstreit) Bausman

Catherine (Hebenstreit) Bausman

Catherine (Hebenstreit) Bausman was my gg-grandmother. She was born December 23, 1863, in Shullsburg, Wisconsin to Vitus and Bertha (Schafer) Hebenstreit. She had four siblings, two  identified: Andrew and Anna Caroline.  I assume her other siblings died in infancy.  Until reading Vitus Hebenstreit's obituary, I was unaware of these children. Catherine married Nicholas Bausman Jr on January 26, 1886, at St. Matthew's Parsonage in Shullsburg, Wisconsin. She spent her married life in Scales Mound, Illinois, and they raised five children: Gertrude, Clement, Pearl, … [Read more...]

Obituary: Nicholas Bausman Jr

Nicholas Bausman Jr

My mom gave me another obituary; she has quite a few in her possession. There is no citation. This is for Nicholas Bausman Jr, son of Nicholas Sr. and Mary (Casper) Bausman.  He was married to Catherine Hebenstreit. I'm not including a newspaper image.  It's a bit long and I didn't feel like manipulating the image into multiple columns. Transcription of obituary: Nicholas Bausman was born on December 2, 1855 at Scales Mound, Ill. He was married to Katie Habenstreit [sic] of Shullsburg, Wis., on Jan. 21, 1886. He died on Jan. 12, 1922, at 10:15 in the … [Read more...]
