Obituary: Carolina Sophia (Wulff) Bohnsack

Lena (Wulff) Bohnsack

Carolina Sophia "Lena" (Wulff) Bohnsack was my gg-grandmother.  She was born in Germany on November 15, 1867 to Henry and Marie (Schumacher) Wulff. She immigrated at 16, and married Carl Herman Bohnsack on January 13, 1891, in Schapville, Illinois.  Herman and Lena had three children: my great-grandfather Leo, Mabel and Mary. I discovered this obituary at Grandma Davis'. The citation is unknown. Obituary: Carl Herman Bohnsack

Carl Herman Bohnsack

Below is the obituary for Carl Herman Bohnsack, husband of Carolina Sophia "Lena" (Wulff), and my great-great grandfather. It was published in in the Freeport Journal-Standard, Monday, 26 Feb 1940, page 14. Note:  In C. Herman's obituary and certificate of death, Joachim Bohnsack is listed as the name of C. Herman's father; however,  the name on his father's headstone is Johann J.H. Bohnsack.  Most likely, his full name was Johann Joachim Hermann (or Henry) Bohnsack.  C. Herman's father is NOT the Joachim Bohnsack buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Galena.  That is … [Read more...]

While I was visiting my grandmother in Scales Mound Illinois, I decided to make a stop at the courthouse in Galena.  I wanted get a few death certificates since a couple weeks ago, I found my great-grandfather's, Carl Herman Bohnsack, obituary and was thrown for a loop.  But that's a story for another time... While picking up the death certificate, I met a cousin.  She was the deputy at the records office in the courthouse.  Her grandmother was Mary Anna Johanna Bohnsack Brandt, the youngest sister of Leo Bohnsack my great grandfather.  What a small world!  Of … [Read more...]

Obituary: Minnie (Deininger) Bohnsack

Minnie (Deininger) Bohnsack

My mom recently lent me some binders filled with genealogical information.  In them, I  was excited to find my great-grandmother's obituary.  She was the wife of Leo Bohnsack and my mom's grandmother. Minnie (Deininger) Bohnsack died before I was born, but my mom has always spoken very warmly of her.  Mom said Minnie was the sweetest lady, made the best bread, and spoke with a heavy German accent.  I find the fact that Minnie had an accent interesting since she was born in Galena, Illinois.  Her parents were German, and Mom remembers that as a child everyone spoke … [Read more...]

Lena Wulff

Obviously, I"ve had a lot of luck finding obituaries about the Wulff family.   This time, I came across my great-great grandmother's, Carolina Sophia Wulff,  from the Freeport Journal-Standard, Sept 30, 1949, page 16. The portrait of Lena is a scan of a copy.  I do not have the original, have never seen the original, and do not remember how I received this image.  Probably through an ancestry.com contact. I'm not sure what's going on with the photo.  It sort of looks like the paper is curling. Transcription of obituary: Mrs. Lena Bohnsack Elizabeth, Ill., … [Read more...]
