Obituary: Gary George Lightcap

Headstone: Gary Lightcap

Gary George Lightcap was the infant son of my grandparents, Wally and Eunice (Strelesky) Lightcap, and older brother of my dad. Gary was born on April 7, 1946, in Dubuque, Iowa, and died on April 23, 1946. He passed at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, one of several babies who died due to an illness that spread through the nursery.

He is buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery, next to his grandparents John Joseph and Ernestine (Sanders) Strelesky.

It’s interesting that the hospitals were so careless back then. My Dad’s brother, Robert Paul Manahl, died February 25, 1946 at Mercy Hospital under similar circumstances. I was told a doctor and/or staff had handled the infants without washing their hands and passed dysentary. He is buried at Mt. Calvary as well.

The date was Feb. 25, 1947, not 1946.

What I don’t understand is how so many babies died and it did not warrant coverage by the local paper. It’s unforgivable that a year after my dad’s brother died of dysentery (and 15 to 20 other babies), your father’s brother died. It’s very sad.
