I found a xerox copy of the Oath of Allegiance for Valentine Schoenhard in my grandparents’ original edition of “History of Jo Daviess County, …” (1878). Valentine took the Oath of Allegiance in New York, New York on October 25, 1853. My grandfather‘s aunt Gertrude (Bausman) married Lester Harvey Schoenhard. (Valentine Schoenhard was Lester’s grandfather.)
When I ordered Christian Smith’s military records (he was a veteran of the War of 1812) from the National Archives, I never imagined that it would have this gem when the records arrived in the mail in May. I was so excited to discover the marriage record of Christian Smith and Rebecca Firestone, my gggg-grandparents….
Robert Barge and Louisa Jane Herod married on November 1, 1859, in Morrow County, Ohio. Louisa Jane’s parents were Thomas and Ellen (Giffin) Herod. There’s no standardization for the last name of Herod. I’ve seen it spelled as Harrod and Herrod. Louisa was the sister of my gg-grandmother, Rhoda Ellen Herod, wife of George Lightcap.
Thomas Herod and Ellen Giffin are my g-g-g-grandparents. Their daughter Rhoda married my g-g-grandfather, George Lightcap. Below is Thomas Herod and Ellen Giffin’s record of marriage. They were united in marriage on May 3, 1838 in Marion, Ohio.
